Examples of a Good Hair Routine

A fantastic hair routine doesn’t have to be complicated. You may be overwhelmed by the sheer volume of hair care products available at your local beauty supply, but don’t worry! Crafting your perfect hair care ritual is easier than it looks.

Whether your hair is stick-straight or kinky-curly, you can find products and regimens that help your strands look their best. You likely have all the components of a great hair care routine right in your cabinets already!

If you’re ready to find out the most important components of a healthy hair routine, keep reading. No matter your hair type, we’ve got some great tips for you.

What Does a Great Hair Routine Look Like?

The perfect hair routine is different for everybody. When it comes to hair care, there is no one-size-fits-all! Dry hair and oily hair require different routines and products, but certain methods are good for nearly all hair types.

At the core of every good hair routine is treating your hair gently. You want to minimize the number of harsh chemicals and treatments going into your hair. Sometimes, the best thing you can do for your hair is simplifying your routine!

If you’re building a routine from scratch, the vital first step is to figure out what kind of hair you have.

Finding Your Hair Texture

Your hair has different needs depending on its texture. Hair texture refers to the structure of your hair strands; whether they lay flat, wave slightly, or bunch up in curls. If you’re not sure about your hair texture, take this hair texture quiz for some guidance.

Sometimes, a good hair care routine will “reveal” your hair’s natural texture in a big way. Many people don’t realize they have curly hair until they start a new routine!

While determining your hair texture, also consider whether your hair is dry or oily. If you have dry hair and a dry scalp, formulate a routine based on hydration. If your hair trends oily, go for invigorating cleanses and oil management.

Don’t Wash Every Day!

You were likely taught to wash your hair every day as a child. This is actually not a great idea! Washing your hair too often strips it of natural oils, and can cause dryness or overproduction of oil.

If you have oily hair, you may be reluctant to skip a wash. But give it a try! Giving your scalp a rest between washes can help it to ease up on oil production.

This may seem counterintuitive! But sometimes oily hair is actually a symptom of a dry scalp. Giving your hair some time to reset can work wonders, promoting great hair and surprising you in the end.

Treat Color With Care

If your hair is dyed, it needs some special attention. Some ingredients in shampoos and conditioners can wreak havoc on colored hair, causing it to fade faster and compromise the integrity of your strands.

If your hair is bleached or dyed a light shade, you’ll likely need to add a hair mask or deep hydrating shampoo to your routine. Hair bleach makes strands more porous and therefore susceptible to dryness.

Not washing your hair every day is especially important with colored hair! Daily shampooing will degrade the color quickly.

Ditch the Heat

Using heat and styling tools once in a while won’t wreak havoc on your hair. But try to reduce your use of heat to once or twice a week, if at all. Even when you use a protective spray, heat tools can dry your hair quickly and cause frizz.

Instead, let your hair air-dry a few times a week. Opt for old-fashioned velcro rollers instead of a curling iron. Keep your hair in two braids to hold in moisture on no-heat days!

When you do use a hairdryer, utilize the diffuser attachment. This gives your hair extra volume and diffuses the heat so that no one area of your scalp is blasted with hot air. Finish up your blow-dry with a blast of cool air as well to make hair extra shiny.

Supplement Your Routine

One of the best things you can do for your hair actually doesn’t involve your hair at all. We’re talking about supplements! Hair supplements are hugely popular among stylists and influencers, and for good reason.

Hair supplements contain a variety of vitamins and ingredients that help your body produce gorgeous hair. Biotin and collagen are two notable ingredients in many hair supplements, as they encourage growth and cell turnover.

There are a lot of hair supplements on the market – deciding which one is best for you could make your head spin! Our personal favorite is Sugarbear Hair. They’re one of the OGs in the hair supplement game, and their line of products are as effective as they are delicious.

But don’t take our word for it! Read through Sugarbearhair reviews here.

Go For High Hydration

If you’ve already ditched your heating tools and found the perfect shampoo and conditioner for your hair, there’s still an extra step you can benefit from. Upping your hair’s hydration levels with a regular hair mask or hair oil treatment.

These moisturizing treatments are best when incorporated as part of a weekly routine. Using oil or masks daily can be overwhelming even to the driest of scalps; instead, opt for a high-hydration conditioner or reducing your wash to once a week.

But hair oil treatments work like magic on dry hair. You’ll feel luxurious and beautiful after just one session!
